Dog Driven: adventure fiction

“McKenna Barney is trying to hide her worsening eyesight and has been isolating herself for the last year. But at the request of her little sister, she signs up for a commemorative mail run race in the Canadian wilderness—a race she doesn’t know if she can even see to run.

Winning would mean getting her disease—and her sister’s—national media coverage, but it would also pit McKenna and her team of eight sled dogs against racers from across the globe for three days of shifting lake ice, sudden owl attacks, snow squalls, and bitterly cold nights.

A page-turning adventure about living with disability and surviving the wilderness, Dog Driven is the story of one girl’s self-determination and the courage it takes to trust in others.” ~quote provided by publisher

Everyone lives in fear of the smallest infraction. However, Cristian doesn’t want to be a spy, and as his eyes are opened to what is happening to his people and the destruction the government has on his family. Together, his people can overthrow the government. As one, they can reclaim their lives, but at what cost?

Merci Suarez Changes Gears

“Merci Suárez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, as strong and thoughtful as Merci is, she has never been completely like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don’t have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. So when bossy Edna Santos sets her sights on the new boy who happens to be Merci’s school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, Merci becomes the target of Edna’s jealousy. Things aren’t going well at home, either: Merci’s grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately — forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. And Merci is left to her own worries, because no one in her family will tell her what’s going on. Winner of the 2019 Newbery Medal, this coming-of-age tale by New York Times best-selling author Meg Medina gets to the heart of the confusion and constant change that defines middle school — and the steadfast connection that defines family.” ~quote provided by publisher

Jimmie’s beautiful voice inspires him to leave the camp to be a performer, while Deza and Mother find a new home, and cling to the hope that they will find Father. The twists and turns of their story reveal the devastation of the Depression and prove that Deza truly is the Mighty Miss Malone.” ~quote provided by publisher

My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich

But in the summer of 1984, when trouble arises with Jeremiah, it’s decided she’ll spend a few weeks with her father in Harlem.

Harlem is an exciting and terrifying place for a sheltered girl from Hunstville, and Ebony-Grace’s first instinct is to retreat into her imagination. But soon 126th Street begins to reveal that it has more in common with her beloved sci-fi adventures than she ever thought possible, and by summer’s end, Ebony-Grace discovers that Harlem has a place for a girl whose eyes are always on the stars.” ~quote provided by publisher

Out of Hiding: biography

“With a foreword by Alan Gratz, New York Times bestselling author of Refugee. Ruth Gruener was a hidden child during the Holocaust. At the end of the war, she and her parents were overjoyed to be free. But their struggles as displaced people had just begun. In war-ravaged Europe, they waited for paperwork for a chance to come to America. Once they arrived in Brooklyn, they began to build a new life, but spoke little English. Ruth started at a new school and tried to make friends — but continued to fight nightmares and flashbacks of her time during World War II. The family’s perseverance is a classic story of the American dream, but also illustrates the difficulties that millions of immigrants face in the aftermath of trauma. This is a gripping and human account of a survivor’s journey forward with timely connections to refugee and immigrant experiences worldwide today.” ~quote provided by publisher

A Wish in the Dark: fantasy

A 2021 Newbery Honor Book

“A boy on the run. A girl determined to find him. A compelling fantasy looks at issues of privilege, protest, and justice.

All light in Chattana is created by one man — the Governor, who appeared after the Great Fire to bring peace and order to the city. For Pong, who was born in Namwon Prison, the magical lights represent freedom, and he dreams of the day he will be able to walk among them. But when Pong escapes from prison, he realizes that the world outside is no fairer than the one behind bars. The wealthy dine and dance under bright orb light, while the poor toil away in darkness. Worst of all, Pong’s prison tattoo marks him as a fugitive who can never be truly free.

Nok, the prison warden’s perfect daughter, is bent on tracking Pong down and restoring her family’s good name. But as Nok hunts Pong through the alleys and canals of Chattana, she uncovers secrets that make her question the truths she has always held dear. Set in a Thai-inspired fantasy world, Christina Soontornvat’s twist on Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables is a dazzling, fast-paced adventure that explores the difference between law and justice — and asks whether one child can shine a light in the dark.” ~quote provided by publisher

A World Below: adventure fiction

“Mr. Baker’s eighth grade class thought they were in for a normal field trip to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. But when an earthquake hits, their field trip takes a terrifying turn. The students are plunged into an underground lake…and their teacher goes missing.

They have no choice but to try and make their way back above ground, even though no one can agree on the best course of action. The darkness brings out everyone’s true self. Supplies dwindle and tensions mount. Pretty and popular Silvia does everything she can to hide her panic attacks, even as she tries to step up and be a leader. But the longer she’s underground, the more frequent and debilitating they become. Meanwhile, Eric has always been a social no one, preferring to sit at the back of the class and spend evenings alone. Now, he finds himself separated from his class, totally by himself underground. That is, until he meets an unexpected stranger.

Told from three different points of view, this fast-paced adventure novel explores how group dynamics change under dire circumstances. Do the students of Mr. Baker’s class really know each other at all? Or do they just think they do? It turns out, it’s hard to hide in the dark.” ~quote provided by publisher

“From award-winning author Deborah Heiligman comes Torpedoed, a true account of the attack and sinking of the passenger ship SS City of Benares, which was evacuating children from England during WWII.

Amid the constant rain of German bombs and the escalating violence of World War II, British parents by the thousands chose to send their children out of the country: the wealthy, independently; the poor, through a government relocation program called CORB. In September 1940, passenger liner SS City of Benares set sail for Canada with one hundred children on board.

When the war ships escorting the Benares departed, a German submarine torpedoed what became known as the Children’s Ship. Out of tragedy, ordinary people became heroes. This is their story.” ~provided by publisher

“World War II may be over, but two sisters are far from safe.

Inspired by true events, this is the latest gripping and powerful novel from the acclaimed author of Making Bombs for Hitler.

Sisters Krystia and Maria have been through the worst ― or so they think. World War II ravaged their native Ukraine, but they both survived, and are now reunited in a displaced persons camp.

Then another girl accuses the sisters of being Nazi collaborators. Nothing could be further from the truth; during the horrors of the war, both sisters resisted the Nazis and everything they stood for. But the Soviets, who are now in charge, don’t listen to the sisters’ protests. Krystia and Maria are taken away and interrogated for crimes they never committed.

Caught in a dangerous trap, the sisters must look to each other for strength and perseverance. Can they convince their captors that they’re innocent ― or escape to safety before it’s too late? Traitors Among Us continues the story of sisters Krystia and Maria from Don’t Tell the Nazis and Trapped in Hitler’s Web.” ~provided by publisher

“The earth is old and we are not, and that is all you must remember . . .

Eleven-year-old Willodeen adores creatures of all kinds, but her favorites are the most unlovable beasts in the land: strange beasts known as “screechers.” The villagers of Perchance call them pests, even monsters, but Willodeen believes the animals serve a vital role in the complicated web of nature.

Lately, though, nature has seemed angry indeed. Perchance has been cursed with fires and mudslides, droughts and fevers, and even the annual migration of hummingbears, a source of local pride and income, has dwindled. For as long as anyone can remember, the tiny animals have overwintered in shimmering bubble nests perched atop blue willow trees, drawing tourists from far and wide. This year, however, not a single hummingbear has returned to Perchance, and no one knows why.” ~provided by publisher

My Everyday Race by Evia L.

With my head hung  low

Oceans pour out

Anger envelops,

A strong wave of doubt.

~

I pray to the Lord,

I don’t hear a reply.

All hope seems lost

But no tears left to cry.

~

My heart cold and empty,

A weighted mass of lead.

I could’ve done something

But coward instead.

~

I started the race

But fell on my knees.

Surpasses by all others,

All hope was deceased.

~

No hope to continue

So I didn’t even try.

Walked home discouraged,

Endlessly asking “why?”.

~

“Continue forward…”

A faint voice whispers.

I fight to ignore;

Its hushed tone empowers.

~

I fold my hands,

And kneel in prayer.

That lump in my throat

No longer there.
~

I awake the next day,

Determined to run.

No matter the outcome,

Won’t stop until I’m done.

~

With God by my side

I start running with grace.

All the weight now gone,

My fate I embrace.

~

I encounter a bump

And collapse to the ground

My knees are all scraped,

My eyes look around.

~

Everyone passes,

And I’m in last place

I wobble to my feet

And continue the race.

~

I finish in last

But victory was mine.

I conquered my fears,

Which is truly divine.

Resilience by Janae P.

Fight through the hard, difficult and pain

See to the end, the wisdom, the gain.

Know the fight is not yours alone.

See the commitment God has shown.

Open your eyes to what He has done.

He has sacrificed his only son!

So, when trouble comes unexpectedly,

Remember you are free!

Rise from your trouble

Above the rubble

And know you are protected,

Not neglected.

See how you are loved.

Resilience #2 by Natalie D.

An ocean of sadness and trials flood my boat,

I long for the end when I reach the shore.

I pump out the water that makes my heart fill with sorrow,

In the distance I see the shore.

There is no way I will make it.

Suddenly, I feel the waters calm.

I move toward the shore,

And find my refuge.

My God, my comfort.

He holds me in His arms and my fears melt away.

I have made it through the past,

And I have more to overcome in the future.

But this time,

I know I can make it to the horizon ahead.

Only because of God.

I Am Hakim by: Hakim R.

Ready? I ask myself.

I wonder when the night will end, but I still try.

I hear nothing but silence.

I see a light, a hope.

I want to reach it; I have to reach it.

Ready, I ask again?

~

I pretend I can feel it.

I feel the weight of the world

I wish for the hope

I worry I won’t make it

I try as hard as possible.

~

I know victory seems out of reach.

But you must believe it’s there.

I dream about that hope.

I try to reach it every day.

And then I touch it, hope.

Let’s finish covid!
